A local delivery company was switching its vans to electric and needed a reliable way to charge them overnight and between rounds. The depot had a large yard but a small grid connection.
The challenge
Charging 16 vans at once would have exceeded the site’s grid capacity, and upgrading the connection would have taken more than a year. The depot works seven days a week, so the yard could never be closed for long.
The system we designed
We built a solar canopy over the parking bays and added smart chargers that share the available power between vans. The system charges from solar first and tops up from the grid at off-peak rates overnight.
- A 150 kWp solar canopy over 20 parking bays
- 16 smart chargers with load balancing
- Charging schedules linked to the delivery rounds
- Phased build so half the yard stayed open at all times
The result
The canopy produces 141,000 kWh a year, and more than 40% of the fleet’s charging energy now comes from the depot’s own roof. The company avoided a costly grid upgrade, and the system pays back in about five and a half years.

“Every van leaves the yard fully charged, and a good share of that energy now comes from the canopy over our heads.”
